Chairman's Report

November 2001

We start this month with police matters. Everyone will be aware of the concern expressed by this Council relating to the speed of traffic through Crick amongst other places in our area. Amazingly only TEN incidents have ever been reported to the police.
Accordingly the area is viewed as one of low priority when any review is taking place. We urge villagers in Crick, or elsewhere, to report any accidents or incidents of dangerous driving even if there were no casualties as this will then be recorded on the police computer and will enhance the case for traffic calming. A note for your calendar - the speed test apparatus will be present in Crick again in the Spring of 2002.

Drug abuse is becoming more of a problem with offenders coming into our area, often from Caldicot, to steal whatever they can. Please be vigilant. More money is being made available to the local force to help tackle the problem.

The Caerwent Training Area will become busier and MoD police patrols will from now on be patrolling the general area. Whilst on military matters, don't forget to record incidents that you consider worthy of complaint regarding low flying aircraft - date and time is needed. Pass your observations on to us so that we can deal with the matter.

Caerwent suffered another serious road accident at the east road junction. We are pressing for a site meeting to discuss what can be done to try to prevent accidents there. Hopefully we can report back to you soon.
There has been no reply as yet to our request for a 20 m.p.h. restriction for the village of Caerwent. We will let you know when we hear.

Those of you whose children use the play areas will need to be aware that a local play area has been damaged.
Nails were driven into the underside of a bench and the points were protruding into the seat.
Please keep an eye on our play areas and let us know of any damage.

The Hill Fort at Llanmellin has been cleared of undergrowth so why not visit it, it's well worth the effort.

Gwerin Housing has cleared the unsafe elm trees in Caerwent and have done an excellent job.
If you are aware of any trees that appear unsafe please let us know.

A reminder that our Remembrance Service will be held at the War Memorial in Caerwent at 10.45 a.m. on Sunday 11th November.
If any organisation, or local person, would like to lay a wreath please get in touch with our Clerk (Laraine McKeon) on 01291 424802.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.

Phil Murphy
Chairman, Caerwent Community Council

A note of appreciation to the people of Caerwent...
I would like to thank all of the local residents who obeyed the "Footpath Closed" signs that were put up on my land by Monmouthshire County Council and CADW during the recent foot and mouth crisis.
The last months have been very difficult for the farming community, but we have been helped by the consideration of local people who have kept away from fields containing sheep or cattle.
Monmouthshire has been downgraded from Infected Area status to At Risk status within the last few days.
This is very good news for us all, but we still have to be careful when coming into contact with farm stock.
Thank you all for your continued support.

Cecil Stone,
Farmer,
Great House Farm
Caerwent.
