September 2001
We hope those of you who got away had a good Holiday!
Local issues go on in spite of visits to other areas, and in particular the matter of speed on
the area's roads and lanes. There was a magnificent response to the call for a speed limit
at Llanfair Discoed and at last, following the many letters - some 70 in number - together with relentless pressure over a period from this Council, there appears to be movement, and 30
MPH notices should be in place by Christmas. It's a start, and it is to be hoped that in some
areas the limit can be extended. Let's hope drivers take notice.
The Llanfair Discoed experience, with lots of letters expressing widespread public concern,
might have an effect in Crick. Let's have a concerted effort by the residents to get the
message home. There cannot possibly be any reason why restrictions on speed could not
be applied to that section of the A48. Then the Police would be able to impose effective
measures of detection and enforcement.
Caerwent also suffers in this respect. Everyone is aware of the disastrous traffic calming
measures there in the past. The use of speed camera signs has been effective in Rogiet
and Langstone, so why not in Caerwent and Crick? Let's have lots of pressure please. It's
no use moaning - let's do something and back up the Community Council's representations.
Remember we are only one voice. 70 letters are 70 voices.
A "Do not let your dog foul this area" sign has been installed at
Trewen. Please respect the area. It's for the safe enjoyment of the local children. Let's
keep it that way.
On the subject of play areas, we have been approached with regard to the use of them for
charitable or community events like Barbecues and such like. Why not? They are public areas so use them.
The efforts to get better access to the Llanmellin Hill Fort continue, with the Ministry of Defence and CADW Welsh Heritage considering various schemes. We will let you know what is decided.
Also in that area is the "Poor Wood". Residents can have a permit (available from the Clerk to the Council) on a restricted basis to collect fallen wood. If you want a permit, contact Larraine McKeon.
All footpaths, CADW sites, etc., are now open following the Foot and Mouth crisis
restrictions being lifted. Let's hope that this is a permanent situation.
Concern has been raised over the very low-level aircraft movement of late. We have
raised the matter with our local Member of Parliament and will let you know what the outcome is in due course.
If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
