1911: Caerwent School
The earliest so far - and may well the oldest Caerwent School class photograph in existence. The names of some of the pupils are known, and will be posted as soon as we get them. Llanvair Discoed school had yet to be built, so some of these youngsters would have had to have walked from Llanvair to Caerwent and back every day. No school buses then! Sincere thanks to Mrs Rose Marsh of Caerwent for this lovely photograph. |
|
1916: Llanvair Discoed school The school was built in 1915, and here is what is thought to be their first school photograph - of the pupils tending the school garden. The two teachers, Miss Marsh and headmistress Miss Walters, and some of the children of the Marsh, Harvey and Pritchard families can be identified. See the enlarged version for full details. We are again indebted to Mrs Rose Marsh for giving us the opportunity to see this delightful picture. |

1922: Caerwent School This group of scholars features a youthful Mabel Hudson (now 90, and Caerwent's oldest resident). According to the card held by the young lady in the front row this is "Group IV, S47". The teacher on the right is Frank Vicarage. |
|
1926: Caerwent School The card says "Caerwent School 1926" and the figure "1" suggests that this is "Class 1". This is one of the early appearances of Miss Christiana Jane 'Chrissie' Pritchard, who lived at Llanvair Discoed, and combined her teaching with being Church organist and running the tiny Post Office at Llanvair with her sister Dorothy - the same Dorothy ('Dolly') who appears above as a pupil at Llanvair School in 1916. |
|
1926: Caerwent School
Again the card says "Caerwent School 1926", but this time with a figure "3" which presumably indicates "Class 3". The card is held by Kath Hillier, and the teacher on the left is the headmistress, Miss Davies. Names wanted please! Sincere thanks to Mrs Kath Baker (Kath Hillier in the photo) for the loan of this photograph. |

As yet these pupils haven't been identified - however their teacher, Miss Pritchard, on the right, is unmistakable! |
