Llanvair Discoed School, 1916
It is unlikely that this was intended as a formal school photograph. It is more probable that the photographer took advantage of the entire school being egaged in some form of horticultural activity, and preserved for us a charming moment in the Llanvair Discoed academic year. The few pupils who have been identified are on the left of the main group. They include Alice Pritchard and her cousin 'Dolly' (Dorothy) Pritchard, and in front of them a very young Tom Marsh sits on the ground before his sister Gwen. A little further along their classmate Eunice Harvey is ready with her spade.
Of the two teachers, the one on the left is identified as Miss Winifred Marsh, the elder sister of the two Marsh children already described. She was eventually to marry Wallace Daw, who appears in a 1945 photograph in the 'Caerwent Album' as a member of the Coach and Horses Darts Team. At the time the photograph was taken she apparently resided at The Kings Arms, which was near to the school. Beside her is Miss Walters, who was the Headmistress - described as 'Governess' in the notes accompanying the photograph.
A point of interest is the wooden hut visible in the background. This was used by the village postman. Incoming mail was delivered to the hut every morning, where he would sort the letters and parcels prior to delivery. Having completed his round he used the hut for carrying on his trade of village cobbler.
Further details about this photograph and the people portrayed are sought - can you help?
