The bakery was on the left, where Caerwent Garage is today, and was owned by 'Billy Adams'.
On the right, a horse and cart waits outside the "Old Ship" Inn. A local recollection states that the Old Ship was owned by the Barratt family, and that every week a lady from Chepstow would come out to the village armed with a bucket of paste and a brush and an armful of posters, advertising what was on at the "Kinema" in Chepstow. She would paste these up in the tea room that was situated at the back of the pub.
In the additional enlargement below we can see that further down the hill the "Coach and Horses" Inn is also open for business.
The late Frank Drower is the one on the left, with his workmate Ernie Morgan. Many years ago Frank personally recalled just how heavy that barrel full of water could be on its metal wheeled trolley. "It never ran away," he recalled, "But there were a few near misses..."
Note also the man with the bicycle climbing the hill behind them and the rolling countryside just visible in the background.
