George Alfred Humphries, Private 266771, 1/6th Welsh Regiment. (Formerly in the Monmouthshire Regiment).
Died in action 15 November 1917 in Belgium. He was born in Caerwent and enlisted in Chepstow. He is buried in the Whitehouse Cemetery, St. Jean-Les-Ypres, Belgium. It seems that he was a brother of Ernest Humphries, who had been killed two years earlier in France, and was the father of Lil Marsh. If this is so then two great nieces of George are now living at Caerwent Brook: Coral Pike and Rosemary Waters. His name was originally missing from our War Memorial but was included on the Portskewett memorial. This may have been because because Parish boundaries were different. GJ June 1999
